Japanese candle industry is one of the 74 traditional industries designated by Kyoto City. It is said that the painting of candles began when people in cold regions offered candles painted with pictures of flowers in place of fresh flowers to the deceased because fresh flowers were not available and they withered quickly when offered at gravesides. The reason why there are so many pictures of flowers for each of the four seasons is said to be due to this custom. These days, they are treated as works of art and various designs are drawn on them.
