We are delighted to announce our special workshop, “The Art of Kabuki Lettering: A Lucky Greeting Card Workshop,” where you can experience the beauty of ornate calligraphy—perfect for New Year’s greetings and celebratory occasions.

This unique experience invites you to familiarize yourself with the auspicious “Kabuki-style” lettering, and create your own lucky greeting card to take home. We offer two options to suit your preference: a 30-minute “Light Course” for a quick introduction, and a 60-minute “Comprehensive Course” to practice fundamental brush techniques. The instructor will provide gentle, step-by-step guidance, ensuring that even those new to calligraphy can participate with ease.

Through this workshop, you can discover the profound depth of Japanese brushwork and enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes from expressing “Iki”—the sophisticated aesthetic of Edo-era style—with your own hands.

■ Fees:
(1) Kabuki Lettering: Light Course – ¥2,000 (Tax included) / Duration: Approx. 30 min.
After learning the basics of Kabuki-style lettering, you will practice following the provided templates. To complete your experience, you will create an auspicious greeting card to take home as a souvenir. This course offers a condensed introduction to the charm of Edo’s “Iki” (sophisticated style) in a short time.

(2) Kabuki Lettering: Comprehensive Course – ¥3,000 (Tax included) / Duration: Approx. 60 min.
In this course, you will begin with an overview of Kabuki lettering, followed by dedicated practice of fundamental brushstrokes, including horizontal and vertical lines. After practicing with templates, you will create your own lucky greeting card to take home. This course is perfect for those who wish to take their time and fully immerse themselves in the art of calligraphy.

*A course for children is also available.
*Option: Mini Shikishi (decorative paper board, approx. 136mm × 120mm) – ¥100 per sheet

 

Instructor: Shinju Kawata (Master of the Kantei-ryu Kabuki Calligraphy style)
Shinju Kawata began studying under Master Jutei Fushiki in 1997 and was awarded her professional name, “Shinju,” in 2003. Driven by a passion to share the charm of Kantei-ryu—a calligraphy style that evolved alongside Kabuki theater since the Edo period—she actively hosts workshops and exhibitions both within Japan and internationally.
Her diverse work includes creating brushwork for Kabuki-za Theatre souvenirs and signage. Dedicated to preserving this traditional art form, she continues her “grassroots” efforts through a wide range of activities, ensuring that the flame of this cultural heritage remains bright for generations to come.
